1When Roshana died, the household did not say she had entered nothing. They kept vigil and sang the good choices by which she had made room for others. 2Dena asked whether the dead could hear. Zarathustra answered, “Do not sing to persuade her. Sing so the living remember what kind of person can recognize welcome.” 3He spoke of the House of Welcome, where truth is not a doctrine recited at the gate but the atmosphere the soul has learned to breathe. 4He spoke also of the House of the Lie, not as a prison built for enemies, but as the terrible condition of a self that can no longer endure reality without distortion. 5A child asked whether every member of their people entered the House of Song. Zarathustra said, “A tribal name cannot sing for a silent conscience.” 6Another asked whether a foreigner who practiced truth would be welcomed. “If the Wise Father rejects goodness because it arrived in another language,” he replied, “then wisdom has become less wise than the child who recognized it.” 7At dawn the singers stopped. The silence did not feel empty.
