The Bridge That Remembers
The soul meets its own practiced form at the crossing
Chapter 128 passages192 words
1A young Keeper dreamed of a bridge resting upon the high mountain. Beneath it moved every excuse human beings had ever made for cruelty. 2Kings arrived carrying decrees. Priests arrived carrying formulas. Merchants arrived carrying accounts. Children arrived carrying only what they had learned to love. 3The bridge widened beneath a widow who had shared her final loaf. It narrowed beneath a judge who had praised truth while selling verdicts. 4The dreamer asked who controlled its width. A radiant figure answered, “No one controls remembrance. The bridge reveals the road already built inside the traveler.” 5“Can repentance change it?” “Repentance is not a word spoken at the edge. It is the rebuilding of the road while there is still earth beneath your feet.” 6“Can another suffer in my place?” The figure answered, “Another may help you rise after falling. No one can choose truth in your place.” 7Beyond the bridge the dreamer heard music without flattery. Every note welcomed what was honest and exposed what still desired a lie. 8When she woke, Dena told her, “Do not teach children to fear the bridge. Teach them to become people whom truth will recognize.”
