At supper Dātam refused the shared bread. Themistocles said, “I defended my city.” Dātam answered, “And my brother obeyed his king. History has trained both of us to use duty as a shield against the face of the dead.”

Themistocles spent months learning Persian speech. Each mistaken word reminded him that intelligence in one city did not make him wise everywhere. The court’s interpreters enjoyed correcting the man whose strategies had once redirected nations.

Artaxerxes eventually entrusted him with cities in Asia Minor. Persian protection did not transform Themistocles into a moral ornament, nor did it erase calculation from the king’s decision. Statesmanship and usefulness walked beside mercy, as they often do.

Dātam later accepted a cup from the Greek but not friendship. “Hospitality does not require me to forget,” he said. “No,” Themistocles replied. “Only to decide that memory will not perform the same action forever.”

The Flamekeepers kept their story because reconciliation was incomplete. Asha did not demand false affection. It demanded that grief lose its authority to choose murder whenever the old enemy entered the room unarmed.
