Book VII · The Physician Who Wanted to Go Home

29A:6

“Atossa summoned Democedes when fear had made concealment more dangerous than examination. He treated her without turning vulnerability into court gossip. Years later, servants remembered less about the remedy than the fact that a foreign captive had protected a queen’s dignity.”

BEHIND THIS SCENE

What is history and what is fiction?

Historically anchoredThe setting or public event is documented; dialogue, motives, and recurring characters are invented.

Historical anchor

Herodotus places the Greek physician Democedes at Darius I’s court after he was sent to Susa as a captive. He reportedly healed Darius, treated Atossa, received extraordinary rewards, and still sought a way home.

Fiction boundary

Democedes, Darius, and Atossa are historical. Mehrasp, the Magian conversations, the patients, and the private moral debate are invented. Herodotus remains the principal narrative source and must be read critically.
