Book VII · The Physician Who Wanted to Go Home

29A:2

“The Greek examined Darius’s injured foot while Egyptian physicians watched with the stillness of men whose rank had become fragile. Democedes asked for warm water, clean cloth, oil, time, and silence. The court had supplied everything except the last.”

BEHIND THIS SCENE

What is history and what is fiction?

Historically anchoredThe setting or public event is documented; dialogue, motives, and recurring characters are invented.

Historical anchor

Herodotus places the Greek physician Democedes at Darius I’s court after he was sent to Susa as a captive. He reportedly healed Darius, treated Atossa, received extraordinary rewards, and still sought a way home.

Fiction boundary

Democedes, Darius, and Atossa are historical. Mehrasp, the Magian conversations, the patients, and the private moral debate are invented. Herodotus remains the principal narrative source and must be read critically.
