BEHIND THIS SCENEWhat is history and what is fiction?
Historically anchoredThe setting or public event is documented; dialogue, motives, and recurring characters are invented.
Historical anchor
The Elephantine papyri report that the temple of Yaho was destroyed around 410 BCE during the absence of satrap Arsames. In 407/408 BCE the community appealed to Bagohi, governor of Yehud, and others for permission to rebuild.
Fiction boundary
The drafting room, Mara’s descendants, the courier, and all dialogue are invented. The destruction, named officials, appeal, and administrative setting are documented in surviving Aramaic correspondence.
