BEHIND THIS SCENE

What is history and what is fiction?

Historically anchoredThe setting or public event is documented; dialogue, motives, and recurring characters are invented.

Historical anchor

The Roman Senate recognized Herod as king in 40 BCE, and he took Jerusalem in 37 BCE with Roman support. His reign combined major building projects and political skill with violence, dynastic insecurity, and executions.

Fiction boundary

The palace conversations and intercepted eastern letter are fictional. Herod’s Roman backing, contested legitimacy, building program, family violence, and fear of rivals are historically grounded principally through Josephus and later scholarship.
